Should I use a heat lamp or an under-tank heating pad (or both) for my reptile?

Reptiles need a heat source to regulate their body temperature. The best way to provide heat depends on your reptile’s natural environment and habits. Here's how heat lamps and under-tank heating pads work and which to use:
Heat Lamp:
Why Use It: Heat lamps provide both heat and light. They’re great for reptiles that need to bask in the heat, like bearded dragons and many types of lizards. The light also helps mimic natural day and night cycles.
How It Works: Heat lamps warm the air and surface area directly beneath them. Some reptiles enjoy basking under a bright heat lamp to raise their body temperature.
Best For: Reptiles that live in warmer, sunnier environments and enjoy basking, like bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and some turtles.
Under-Tank Heating Pad:
Why Use It: Heating pads provide consistent warmth from the bottom of the tank. They’re useful for reptiles that need warm ground to stay active or digest food properly.
How It Works: These pads are placed under the tank to heat the surface underneath. It mimics the warmth reptiles would feel in the wild from sun-heated rocks or the ground.
Best For: Reptiles that prefer to stay close to the ground, like snakes and turtles, and those that need constant warmth for digestion, like some species of lizards.
Both Heat Lamp and Heating Pad:
Why Use Both: Many reptiles need both heat sources to stay healthy. A heat lamp provides basking heat and light, while an under-tank heating pad offers steady warmth from below. This setup creates a temperature gradient within the enclosure so your reptile can choose where they want to go based on their needs.
Best For: Species that require both basking areas and warm ground. For example, bearded dragons benefit from a heat lamp for basking and an under-tank heating pad for additional warmth.
Snakes:
Why Either Works: Many species of snakes can thrive with either a heat lamp or an under-tank heating pad, depending on their needs and natural habitat. For example, some snakes enjoy basking under a heat lamp to raise their body temperature, while others are fine with warmth coming from the ground, provided by an under-tank heating pad.
Best For: Snakes like ball pythons or corn snakes, who can comfortably use either method for heat, though they still need a warm side and cooler side of the enclosure.
General Tips:
Temperature Gradient: Your reptile’s enclosure should have a warm side (where the heat lamp or pad is) and a cooler side. This allows your reptile to move between warmer and cooler areas to regulate their body temperature.
Thermometers: Use thermometers to monitor the temperature on both sides of the tank to make sure the heat is just right. Too hot or too cold can stress your reptile.
UVB Light: Some reptiles also need UVB light, which helps them absorb calcium and stay healthy. A heat lamp with UVB light can be a two-in-one solution.
Which One Should You Use?
For Basking Reptiles: Use a heat lamp (and UVB light) to create a basking spot.
For Ground-Loving Reptiles: Use an under-tank heating pad for warm surfaces.
For Both Types: Use both heat lamps and heating pads to provide a full range of temperatures for your reptile.
For Snakes: You can use either a heat lamp or an under-tank heating pad, depending on the snake’s preference.
