Do I need to use vitamin or calcium supplements when feeding my reptile?

Why Calcium is Important: Calcium helps reptiles build and keep strong bones. Without enough calcium, reptiles can develop problems like weak bones (called metabolic bone disease). In the wild, reptiles get enough calcium from what they eat and the environment, but in captivity, they may need supplements.

Which Reptiles Need Calcium:

  • Plant-eating reptiles (like tortoises) usually need extra calcium because their plant-based food doesn’t always have enough.

  • Reptiles that eat both plants and insects (like bearded dragons and turtles) need calcium to stay strong.

  • Insect-eating reptiles (like leopard geckos) need calcium too, especially if they only eat insects.

Why Vitamins Matter:

Vitamins, especially Vitamin D3, help reptiles absorb and use calcium properly. If your reptile isn’t getting enough UVB light (which helps them make Vitamin D3), they may need a Vitamin D3 supplement to help them use the calcium you provide.

Which Reptiles Need Vitamin D3:

  • Reptiles that get UVB light, like bearded dragons, need it to use calcium properly. If they’re not getting enough UVB light, they may need a Vitamin D3 supplement.

  • Reptiles with little access to light, like some geckos, may need Vitamin D3 since they don’t get as much UVB.

How to Add Calcium and Vitamins:

  1. Calcium Powder:

    • Sprinkle calcium powder on insects or veggies before feeding.

    • How Often: Dust food with calcium 2-3 times a week for most reptiles.

  2. Multivitamin Powder (with Vitamin D3):

    • Sprinkle a multivitamin powder on food once a week.

    • How Often: Use this 1-2 times a week, but avoid overuse to prevent too much Vitamin D3.

  3. Calcium Blocks or Cuttlebone:

    • Leave a calcium block or cuttlebone in your reptile’s enclosure for them to nibble on.

    • How Often: Leave it in the enclosure all the time.

  4. Liquid Supplements:

    • Some supplements come in liquid form. You can add it to your reptile’s water or food.

    • How Often: Follow the directions on the product.

  5. UVB Lighting:

    • UVB lights help reptiles naturally make Vitamin D3, which helps them use calcium.

    • How Often: Keep UVB light on for 10-12 hours a day. Replace the bulb every 6-12 months.

Supplementing Tips:

Always use supplements made specifically for reptiles. The frequency of supplements depends on your reptile’s needs. Some need it daily, while others may only need it a few times a week. If you’re unsure, consult your vet or Family Reptiles for advice. Reptiles with a healthy, varied diet and adequate UVB light may not need extra supplements.
